Mission Impossible- Sound & Character Representation

On Wednesday's lesson we watched the beginning of "Mission:Impossible", and as prep we had to document sound and character representation.

Sound:
Percussion was played at the start, and as the situation escalated and got more intense, the rhythm got faster, along with the beat. The theme music ends this climax, and its sound is immediately recognized. It's very catchy, and one doesn't need to think twice about the genre; action, most probably with spy work and underground mysteries.

Character Representation:
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is obviously the main focus in this film, and he is first shown in a hero shot.  It consists of a tight frame shot, slightly from below, where he has an intent gaze. This creates an illusion of him being the main character in the film. As the film progresses, we see this confident and naive young man, who doesn't show a sign of weakness. He's on a mission with several other members, one of them being his lover. But because another service was in their tracks, everyone died but him. This is not only a shock to the viewers, because the characters they had got to know died (the exception being Ethan), but there are 100 different options that could take place in the movie.

Overall, it fits into the genre of action and adventure. It could be labelled as a stereotypical film, but Tom Cruise's acting skills bring on a whole new level.

  1. Thoughtful observations about the type of music and the effects it creates.Good comment about the hero shot. In what way is he constructed as a typical action adventure hero in this extract?
